Applications are now open for Bard College’s 2026 Creative and Analytical Math Program (CAMP), a unique summer academic enrichment program designed for middle school students with a passion for mathematics. Each year, a mathematical theme is explored through mathematics, computer science, and art, allowing students to work in all three areas to receive a well-rounded and enriching experience. This acclaimed program, recognized by the American Mathematical Society with Epsilon Awards, will take place from August 3–7 on Bard’s Annandale campus. It differs from a traditional camp by offering an immersive and intellectually stimulating environment where students from grades 5 through 8 can explore mathematics through creative and engaging activities. Through exposure to topics outside the standard curriculum, the program focuses on developing students' mathematical thinking and problem solving ability.
“We’re excited to welcome another group of enthusiastic young mathematicians to Bard College,” said Japheth Wood, associate professor of Mathematics at Bard and codirector of CAMP. “The Bard Math CAMP is designed to ignite curiosity and deepen students’ understanding of mathematics in a fun and creative way. We believe that math is not just about numbers; it’s about problem-solving, critical thinking, and exploring the beauty of abstract concepts.”

This August, Director of Quantitative Literacy and Associate Professor of Mathematics Japheth Wood co-directed the 12th annual Bard Math Circle's Creative and Analytical Math Program (CAMP). Running from August 4 to 8, CAMP invited 23 middle school mathematicians to Bard’s Annandale campus from the Hudson Valley area and beyond. The program brought students into contact with various areas of math using coding, Rubik's Cubes, card tricks, and more. Students also got outside to play “amoeba tag” and hike around Bard’s scenic grounds.
CAMP is a summer academic enrichment program for middle school students taking place on Bard’s campus every summer. It was recognized by the American Mathematical Society with the Epsilon Award. CAMP aims to explore topics in math outside what students are normally exposed to in school, bringing together the study of math, computer science, and art. The program is led by Bard Math Circle, which also holds Math Afternoons at the Kingston Library.

Hancy Maxis ’15, Bard Prison Initiative (BPI) alumnus, spoke with the Hechinger Report about the role that learning math played in his life upon his release. He recalls considering the question of, “Once I am back in New York City, once I am back in the economy, how will I be marketable? For me, math was that pathway.” Maxis completed a bachelor’s degree in mathematics, where he wrote his senior project about how to use game theory to advance health care equity. Maxis later completed a master’s program at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health and is now the assistant director of operations at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx, where he worked to guide the hospital’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Polina Dolmatova, AUCA RKC 1115:00 pm EDT/GMT-4 This talk will explore how data, statistics, and storytelling can be used to drive civic engagement and address community needs, drawing from a multi-year teaching and research experience at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA). Emphasizing experiential learning, inquiry-based research, and ethical data use, the talk will highlight how student projects at AUCA have resulted in actionable insights, publications, and even national-level impact through a faculty-student research initiative (CEDCAS) in partnership with the Ministry of Digital Development. The session will reflect on the outcomes, challenges, and future opportunities of using data-driven storytelling as a tool for civic awareness and addressing community needs.
Polina Dolmatova is an Associate Professor of the Applied Mathematics and Informatics Department at the American University of Central Asia (AUCA), Bishkek, Kyrgyz Republic. Since 2009 she has worked at AUCA and taught various mathematical courses for undergraduate and graduate students. In 2023 and 2024, in collaboration with professors and students of AUCA , she created the OER video and written case study "The Journey of Kaiyrkul: Civic Engagement for Education Equity in Kyrgyzstan, the Republican Olympiad on Mathematics."
