Julia sets are a certain family of fractals that arise from functions on the complex plane. These sets play a prominent role in complex dynamics, a subject with important connections to topology, complex analysis, and algebraic geometry. In this talk, I will explain the origin of Julia sets and discuss their geometric structure. If time permits, I will outline some current research into the geometry of Julia sets in two complex dimensions.
