Mac OS X Software for Mathematicians

LaTeX

  • MacTeX
Containing TeX, XeTeX, TeXShop, BibDesk, Excalibur, and i-Installer, this package saves you the trouble of downloading and installing all of these programs separately.

  • TeXShop
Edit your TeX files, run them through PDFLaTeX, and view the PDF output with this award winning open source front end by Dick Koch at the University of Oregon. I contributed the autocompletion code (try it by checking the box in the Preferences window, and then typing "e^x").

  • BibDesk
Manage your BibTeX bibliography database wth this open source editor.

  • Short Math Guide for LaTeX
This guide is a concise summary of the essential features in LaTeX for writing math formulas, including features provided by the packages amssymb and amsmath. This is not a mere listing of everything available but a careful selection of the LaTeX commands that are especially recommended for authors' use. There is also some discussion of certain common uses and misuses of various commands that are better avoided for reasons of typographical quality or logical markup.

  • User's Guide to AMS-LaTeX

  • The Comprehensive LaTeX Symbol List
Find out how to TeX pretty much any symbol ever used with this PDF guide.

  • Mac OS X TeX/LaTeX Web Site
Visit here for a much more comprehensive treatment of TeX-related software for Mac OS X.

  • My Introduction to LaTeX
PDF of my talk "Introduction to LaTeX", as well as the LaTeX source.

Mathematical Software

  • Cohomology.com
Try out my own mathematical software for teaching linear algebra, playing with supersymmetry, and enhancing BibDesk.

  • Sage
Sage is open source mathematics software. A viable alternative to Magma, Maple, Mathematica, and Matlab, it uses the highly regarded Python scripting language, and its user interface is presented via your web browser.

  • arXiv Widget
Check out the latest posting on the arXiv with this Dashboard widget.

  • arXiv Search Widget
Initiate arXiv searches from Dashboard with this widget.

General Software

  • Taco HTML Edit
Create your web pages with this free editor, featuring syntax coloring and live previews.

  • Fugu
Transfer files to and from your web server or university account with this free secure FTP utility.

  • OmniGraffle
When you need to draw a diagram too complicated for TeX, but not worth buying Adobe Illustrator, try this Mac OS X-savvy diagramming application.

  • Adobe Reader
Try this fully featured PDF viewer if you get tired of Apple's Preview application.

  • Skype
Talk to your collaborators in Europe with this internet phone utility. You can talk to other Skype users for free or land line or cell phones for a nominal fee. It works much better than Apple's iChat for me.

  • WeatherPop
When you have been stuck in your office too long, check the weather with this menu bar gauge.

  • MenuCalendarClock
Replace your menu bar clock with this calendar utility. The registered version even shows iCal data.
